Close Off the Space Beneath the Array
Rooftop solar creates a sheltered gap of several inches between the modules and the roof. Pigeons find it quickly. Once they settle in, nesting material and droppings build up, trap moisture against the roofing and sit on top of wiring. Wind adds leaves and twigs. Squirrels sometimes move in behind the birds and chew on whatever they find. None of that helps the roof or the system. A critter guard solves it by closing the perimeter. We fit a durable mesh around the full edge of the array and fasten it to the module frames with clips designed for the purpose. The installation is non-penetrating: no holes in the modules, no holes in the roof. Air still circulates under the array and water still drains, but birds and debris cannot get in. If nesting is already present, we clear what can be reached before closing the perimeter so nothing gets trapped inside. The most efficient time to install a guard is during a detach and reset, when the modules are going back onto a clean roof. It can also be added to an existing array.
